The Meaning Behind Lighthouses Lead: Why Generational Connection Matters

Last week, someone asked me why I chose the name Lighthouses Lead for my organization. I was truly happy to share the passion and purpose behind it, because the name isn’t just a label—it reflects everything I believe about people, wisdom, and the power of connection.

I’ve always been captivated by lighthouses. And yes, I know—living in Nebraska means I’m about as far from ocean views as you can get. But that distance has never diluted their impact on me. There’s something timeless about a lighthouse: a strong, steady structure that withstands decades of storms, winds, and tidal waves. No matter how fierce the conditions, its beacon continues to guide ships safely into harbor.

When I began shaping Lighthouses Lead, I thought a lot about what lighthouses represent. To me, they symbolize the generations before us—those who have weathered their own storms and carry wisdom, resilience, and stories that illuminate the path for others. Like a lighthouse standing firm on the shoreline, older generations hold knowledge that has stood the test of time. Their insights help guide us, warn us of dangers, and remind us of the strength we come from.

But a lighthouse doesn’t exist only for the past. It also welcomes the future.

In its harbor are ships coming in—each one unique, carrying new ideas, fresh perspectives, and experiences yet to be shared. This is the younger generation. They arrive with curiosity, innovation, and energy that add to the ever‑changing landscape of our communities. When these ships enter the harbor, they don’t replace the lighthouse—they complement it. They bring life and movement to the foundation that has already been built.

That connection—between the lighthouse and the ships, between the generations that have come before and those rising now—is what inspires the heart of Lighthouses Lead. I believe deeply that when generations come together, something powerful happens. The wisdom of the past meets the creativity of the present. Stories are exchanged. Strength is shared. And in that space, we build shorelines stronger than anything we could create alone.

In a world that often separates people by age, preference, or experience, I want to create a place that brings them back together. Because the truth is: we need each other.
The lighthouse needs the ships to give its purpose meaning, and the ships need the lighthouse to help them navigate unfamiliar waters.

That connection is where true growth begins.
And that connection is exactly why Lighthouses Lead exists.
